3D computer models of actual physical plant structures enable accurate 3D visualization of the plant.

3D visualization, in turn, is used to reduce retrofit project design errors, thus minimizing subsequent construction errors and delays. Net projects cost savings in the range of 5% - 15% are not uncommon for retrofit projects that take advantage of 3D design and visualization. Although the benefits of 3D CAD models are known, many retrofit projects still do not take advantage of 3D for design. This is often due to the time, expense and difficulty of generating accurate 3D models.

The Process

Site Activity

Survey targets are strategically located throughout the area being scanned. The theodolite, a very accurate surveying tool, precisely locates the targets relative to a common point of reference. Scans are then made of all targets and the surrounding elements included in the area to be as-built. Multiple scans are combined by using specific coordinates from surveyed targets and by software techniques. The result is a point cloud representing a view of the entire area.

Office Analysis

Most scan registration is done on site but closer analysis is made in the office. After all scans are linked together or registered, any object visible in a scan can be located in three-dimensional space. Scans can be used to check dimensions for particular objects, check for interferences against new work, and/or creation of a 3D CAD model.
